Theater District: An Economic Driver for Downtown

Our original member breakfast event host, Alley Theater, suffered severe damage during Hurricane Harvey. We decided to proceed with the event, as regularly scheduled on September 13, to show our support to the theater community and showcase their resilience. Four Seasons Hotel graciously agreed to host our breakfast on short notice. The distinguished panel consisted of Houston Symphony’s Board member, Janet Clark; Alley Theater’s Dean Gladden; Theater Under the Stars (TUTS) Hillary Hart; and Theater District Board Chair and Houston Grand Opera’s Perryn Leech. Moderated by Kathryn McNiel, CEO of the Theatre District, the panel discussed the damages sustained by their respective theaters and the challenges faced with finding temporary alternate venues for their scheduled performances, since each theater is designed specifically for particular types of production/performances. The overwhelmingly positive response from the business community showed the true downtown spirit, as businesses offered to house the theater groups in their offices, and each theatre company helped their fellow neighbor.
